Marine NMEA2000 & Controller Area Network (CAN)

NMEA2000 (N2K) is a communication system that is easy to set up and use. It is a network of multiple devices that can send and receive data on a common bus. All devices are connected to each other through their inputs and outputs. NMEA 2000 uses the same high-level protocol as SAE J1939, but has its own specific messages. NMEA 2000 devices and J1939 devices can work together on the same network. This means that they can share the network bandwidth, and recognize and respond to each other's messages.
To install an NMEA 2000® network, you need to connect NMEA 2000® devices with cables and connectors that are plug-and-play.

Five basic steps:
  1. Cable and Connector Network Basics
  2. Installing Terminators
  3. Supplying Power
  4. Grounding the Network
  5. Checking the Network
